A cataract develops when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy. It can cause blurred or hazy vision, glare, difficulty driving at night, faded colours or frequent changes in spectacle power.

A cataract consultation helps determine whether cataract is present, how much it is affecting vision and whether another eye condition also needs attention.

Understanding Your Visual Difficulty

The ophthalmologist will ask how your vision affects activities such as reading, driving, computer work, recognising faces, watching television, household tasks and moving safely in low light.

Surgery is not recommended only because a cataract exists. The decision also depends on how vision is affecting daily life and the overall health of the eye.

Examination and Tests

A consultation may include distance and near-vision assessment, spectacle-power testing, eye-pressure measurement, slit-lamp examination and dilated retinal examination. If surgery is being planned, measurements of the eye may be required to calculate the power of the artificial lens.

Discussing Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is the only way to remove a cataract. However, not every cataract requires immediate surgery. Your ophthalmologist will explain whether continued monitoring or surgery is more appropriate.

Discussing Lens Options

The choice of artificial lens depends on the health of the eye, existing spectacle power, astigmatism, lifestyle and visual priorities. Each option has benefits and limitations. No lens should be presented as a guarantee of complete freedom from glasses.

What to Bring

Bring current spectacles, previous eye reports and a list of medicines. Inform the doctor about blood thinners, diabetes, allergies, previous eye procedures and other medical conditions.
